Planning a family photo session can feel exciting and a little overwhelming, especially when coordinating schedules and outfits and wondering if the kids will cooperate! I get it. That’s why I’ve put together this guide to help you feel relaxed, prepared, and ready to enjoy your time in front of the camera.
Here are my top tips to help you prepare for a smooth, beautiful, and meaningful family session:
Lighting makes all the difference in photography! I usually recommend shooting during golden hour—the hour after sunrise or before sunset—because the soft, warm light creates a dreamy glow.
Not an early bird? That’s okay! I’ll work with your family’s schedule to find a time that works for everyone (especially little ones).
Think coordinated, not identical. Soft neutrals, earthy tones, and light patterns photograph beautifully together. Choose two to three main colors and build everyone’s outfits around that palette.
Avoid logos or busy patterns, and let your personalities shine through with accessories like scarves, hats, or layered textures.
Need help? I’m happy to offer styling guidance ahead of time!
Talk to your little ones beforehand about what to expect—keep it positive and fun. If needed, let them bring a small comfort toy or snack.
Adults: It’s okay if not every smile is perfect. The real magic happens in the candid, in-between moments—laughs, cuddles, the way your child grabs your hand. Trust the process.
Kids don’t always love standing still—and that’s okay! My approach is relaxed and playful. We’ll move around, tell stories, play games, and follow your family's energy.
Letting go of “perfect” often leads to the most authentic and heartwarming photos.
You’ve already done the hard work by showing up. Now it’s my turn. I’ll guide you with gentle posing, help ease any nerves, and capture the love and connection that makes your family unique.
Whether it’s your first or fifth session, you’ll walk away with timeless images you’ll treasure for years.
Family photography isn’t just about getting a holiday card photo—it’s about preserving moments that will matter even more as time passes. I’m honored to help you tell your family’s story, one frame at a time.
Let’s create something beautiful together.
